Setting up a new HP Smart Tank printer is a straightforward process, and this guide will walk you through unboxing, physical setup, Wi-Fi configuration, and performing a test print.
Important Note: While the general steps are similar for most HP Smart Tank models, always refer to your specific printer's manual or the instructions provided by the HP Smart app for precise details and any model-specific variations.
● Unpack the Box: Carefully remove the printer and all its components from the box. This typically includes the printer itself, ink bottles, printheads, power cord, and setup guides.
● Remove Packing Materials: Take off all tape, stickers, and protective packing materials from the exterior and interior of the printer. Pay close attention to areas like the output tray, ink access doors, and around the printhead carriage.
● Place the Printer: Set the printer on a stable, level surface where you intend to use it.
● Connect Power: Plug the power cord into the back of the printer and then into an electrical outlet. Do NOT connect the USB cable at this point (if your model uses one). The USB connection is typically established during software installation.
● Turn On: Press the power button to turn on the printer. Wait for it to become idle. Some models may prompt you to select a language on a touchscreen if available.
This is a key difference for Smart Tank printers compared to cartridge-based models.
● Open Ink Access Door: Lift the ink access door (usually on the left side of the printer).
● Open Tank Covers & Caps: Open the individual tank covers for each color (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Black) and then twist or flip open the caps on the ink tanks themselves.
● Fill Ink Tanks:
1. Match the color of the ink bottle with the color of the corresponding ink tank.
2. Invert the ink bottle and place its nozzle onto the tank's nozzle. The ink should drain automatically. Do not squeeze the bottle.
3. Once the tank is full, remove the bottle, close its cap, and then close the tank cap.
4. Repeat for all other ink tanks. Note that the black ink bottle might have some ink leftover if the tank is full.
5. Caution: Do not overfill the tanks. All four ink tanks must be filled for the printer to function correctly.
● Close Doors and Wait: Close the ink tank covers and the ink access door. Wait for approximately 15-30 seconds for the printer to purge and calibrate the ink.
● Install Printheads:
1. Open the ink access door again (if the carriage hasn't moved to the center, close and reopen the door after 15 seconds). Wait for the printhead carriage to move to the center and stop.
2. Locate and press the blue button or latch to open the printhead cover.
3. Remove and discard any orange guards or protective tape from the printhead area.
4. Remove the printheads from their packaging. Do not touch the copper-colored contacts or the ink nozzles.
5. Insert the printheads into their designated slots (usually one black, one color) and gently push them in until they snap into place.
6. Close the printhead cover and then the ink access door.
● Load Paper:
1. Raise the input tray.
2. Slide the paper width guide to the left.
3. Load a stack of plain white paper into the input tray, ensuring the print side (if applicable) is facing down.
4. Slide the paper width guide to the right until it touches the edge of the paper.
5. Open the output tray extender.
● Print Alignment Page: After a short while, an alignment page should automatically print. If not, the HP Smart app will guide you through this step.
● Scan Alignment Page:
1. Once the alignment page prints and the "open lid" light blinks, open the scanner lid.
2. Place the printed alignment page face down on the scanner glass, aligning it with the guides.
3. Close the scanner lid.
4. Press the blinking "Copy" button (or follow on-screen prompts if your printer has a display). The printer will scan the page and complete the printhead alignment. An "A" may blink on the display during the scan and disappear when finished.
The HP Smart app is the recommended and easiest way to set up your HP Smart Tank printer, especially for Wi-Fi connectivity.
● Download HP Smart App:
1. Go to 123.hp.com on your computer or mobile device.
2. Follow the prompts to download and install the HP Smart app for your operating system.
● Open HP Smart App:
1. Launch the HP Smart app.
2. If prompted, create or sign in to an HP account.
● Add Your Printer:
1. Click "Add a New Printer" or the plus sign (+) icon in the app.
2. The app will search for your new printer. If it doesn't find it automatically, ensure your printer is on and in Wi-Fi setup mode (the Wi-Fi light on the printer might be blinking).
If the printer isn't found:
● For printers without a touchscreen: You might need to restore Wi-Fi setup mode. Often this involves pressing and holding the Wireless button and Cancel button simultaneously until the Power button blinks, and then waiting for the Wireless light to blink.
● Alternatively, you can try connecting using WPS (Wi-Fi Protected Setup) if your router has a WPS button. On the printer, press and hold the Wi-Fi button for about 5 seconds until the light starts flashing. Within two minutes, press and hold the WPS button on your router.
● Follow On-Screen Prompts:
1. The HP Smart app will guide you through connecting your printer to your Wi-Fi network (HP Smart Tank printers typically support 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi).
2. You may be asked to select your Wi-Fi network name (SSID) and enter the password.
3. The app will also help you install any necessary drivers and complete the software setup for printing and scanning from your device.
Once your printer is connected to Wi-Fi and set up with the HP Smart app, you can perform a test print.
● From the HP Smart App:
1. In the HP Smart app, you should see your printer listed.
2. You can usually find an option to "Print a document" or "Print a photo." Select a simple document or image to print.
● Printing a Self-Test Page from the Printer:
1. Most HP Smart Tank printers have button combinations to print various reports, including a self-test page or printer status report. This is useful for checking print quality and network connectivity directly from the printer.
Common methods (may vary by model):
● Printer Status Report: Press and hold the "Information" button until all control panel lights illuminate, then press the "Resume" button (or just press and hold the "Information" button until it prints). This report shows ink levels, network status, and usage.
● Print Quality Diagnostic Page: Press and hold the "Information" button for 5 seconds until lights illuminate, then press and hold the "Color Copy" button for 3 seconds. This page helps diagnose print quality issues.
● Wireless Network Test Results: Press the "Information" button and "Wireless" button simultaneously. This will print a report on your Wi-Fi connection.
Congratulations! Your HP Smart Tank printer should now be unboxed, set up, connected to Wi-Fi, and ready for printing.
